After fifty years of being derelict and not practicing at all, I got the much appreciated opportunity to join the Peninsula Symphonic Band, a true community band—no auditions, no censorious looks askance, just good fellow feeling in the shared joy of making music. My last gig, back in 1957 and then a sophomore, had been with the C.K. McClatchy Senior High School marching band in Sacramento, California. Having spent thirty-five of those intervening fifty years on the faculty of the University of Chicago teaching and writing about Bangla literature, the language, and aspects of cultural history pertaining to Bangladesh and the Kolkata region of eastern India, I retired in 2006 and along with my wife Gwen settled down year round at our farmstead, the old Welter place in Jacksonport. If curious, there’s more at my-web-site.
